Creating Item(s) in PDM
From Data Card
1. To create a single PLM item from a design file, right-click on it in PDM, select Show File Info, and scroll to the PLM Item section. Click + Create Item.
Verify the desired configuration is selected from the metadata dropdown towards the top of the data card.
2. Choose the Category from the dropdown and assign a Name to the item or select the Use Part Number as Item Name checkbox.
3. Fill out the default item fields and make any necessary edits to the information mapped from the file metadata.
4. Complete any Item Category Fields if there are any that populate on creation for the selected category. These may or may not be required.
When creating an item for an assembly, the children files must be linked to a PLM item for them to appear in the assembly item BOM.
5. Deselect any checkboxes if the design file should not be the source for the item Thumbnail, BOM, or Metadata.
6. Click Create & Link. From the workspace view and data card, the PLM Part Number will be auto-generated.
From Right-Click Menu
1. To create multiple PLM items at once, select one or more design files from PDM. Right-click on them and choose Create Items from the PLM section.
2. Confirm the configurations that are not currently linked and will be pushed to new items. Enabling Generate for all configs will create new items for all unlinked configurations. Click Generate.
3. Choose the Category from the dropdown and assign a Name to the item or select the Use Part Number as Item Name checkbox.
4. Fill out the default item fields and make any necessary edits to the information mapped from the file metadata.
5. Complete any Item Category Fields if there are any that populate on creation for the selected category. These may or may not be required.
6. Deselect any checkboxes if the design files should not be the source for their respective item Thumbnail, BOM, or Metadata.
When creating an item for an assembly, the children files must be linked to a PLM item for them to appear in the assembly item BOM.
7. Click Create & Link. From the workspace view and data card, the PLM Part Number will be auto-generated.
Creating Item(s) in PLM
This method is best for users that would like to generate a part number first so that it can be used as the file name for new CAD data.
1. Click + New from the Items tab in PLM.
2. Leave Number of Items as 1 or increase for the number of items you would like to create manually.
3. Choose the Category from the dropdown and assign a Name to the item or select the Use Part Number as Item Name checkbox.
4. Fill out the item fields and make any necessary edits to the information mapped from the file metadata. These may or may not be required.
5. Click Create Item. This creates a blank item with no Design Files until they are added or linked.
Creating Items in Mass from Excel
1. Click + New from the Items tab in PLM.
2. Select the Import from Excel button.
3. Upload the Excel file and click Continue. Columns will be automatically mapped when they share a name with any of the available item fields. Item Name and Category are required.
4. Click Import to finalize the item creation. These will be empty items with no Design Files until they are added or linked.
Adding Design Files - PLM
1. Click Add Design File from the Design Files tab.
2. Choose whether to select from PDM or upload new files.
3. When selecting from PDM, navigate to the relevant workspace/directory and choose the relevant file(s).
4. Change the relevant configuration if needed and whether this file should take precedence for the item thumbnail, BOM (if it has child components), or metadata.
5. Click Add Files.
Linking Design Files - PDM
1. To link a design file, find it in PDM and access its data card (right-click > Show File Info).
2. Scroll to the PLM Item section of the data card and choose Link to item.
3. Choose the relevant PLM item and set precedence for the Thumbnail, BOM, or Metadata if desired.
The item will be automatically matched you are linking a drawing associated with a CAD file that is already attached to a PLM item. If existing part numbers were mapped to the PDM Part Number metadata field on upload, an Item/PLM Part Number that is shared will be automatically matched as well.
4. Click Link.
Removing Design Files from Item - PLM
Users can remove design files by right-clicking one or more and choosing the Remove option.
Unlinking Design Files - PDM
Users can also unlink design files from a PLM item from the file data card in PDM.
