Whether you need to fix a typo, reorganize files, or remove unnecessary files, follow these best practices to ensure consistency across your organization.
Understanding File Management in Bild
Bild Cloud serves as the single source of truth for all users in your organization. The file paths and folder structures in the web application are reflected across both the web and desktop applications, and are also used by your CAD system when opening and saving files.
To ensure all changes are applied correctly and prevent check-in/check-out issues, most file management actions should be performed in the Bild Web Application.
Renaming Files
Since CAD systems rely on file names to maintain parent-child relationships, renaming a file requires an assembly rebuild. Therefore, files must be renamed within your CAD system and saved as a new file.
However, Bild allows you to preserve file history (including check-ins, check-outs, and releases) when renaming files.
Renaming SolidWorks Files
To rename a SolidWorks file while maintaining its history:
In the Bild Desktop App, Check Out the file (including its assembly) that you want to rename.
Use the SolidWorks Rename Workflow, selecting "Save As."
Enter the new file name and save it in the same location as the original file.
In the Bild Desktop App, the renamed file will appear as a New File.
Click Push New Files (or right-click the file and select "Push New File" for specific uploads).
Click Select File to pair the newly named file with the original checked-out file.
Once paired, click Upload to maintain the file’s historical data and activity while updating its name.
Moving Files
Files can be moved anywhere within your Bild account, but must be moved from the Web Application to ensure path consistency. Moving files via Windows File Explorer can cause file path mismatches between Bild and your local drive.
Navigate to the Web Application and locate the file(s) you need to move.
Select the file(s) to be moved.
Right-click and, under File Actions, select Move Files.
Choose the new destination:
If moving files to another project, select "Move to other projects."
Click Move Here to finalize the move.
Note: If a file is open locally, it will not be moved and may be duplicated as "New." Once a file is moved in Bild Web, the change applies to all users in the project.
Deleting Files
Deleting files from the Web Application removes them from the cloud and affects all users.
Navigate to the Web Application and go to the relevant project/folder.
Select the file(s) you want to delete permanently.
Right-click and hover over File Actions.
Select Delete File.
Best Practice: Only delete files if they are no longer needed by your team. If you want to retain file history, consider moving them to an Archived folder instead.
